Every Outward Bound course is challenging, but ever-changing weather conditions and the unpredictable nature of frozen terrain make winter expeditions particularly demanding and exciting. On a winter expedition, you’ll have the opportunity to adventure through areas with vast frozen lakes and towering snow-draped forests, or carve tracks in pristine snow on remote mountainsides—experiences that teach you how to live day-to-day in a rugged, forbidding environment. In the muffled stillness of a fresh snowfall, you'll hear the sound of self-reliance and a newfound confidence.
Working as a team, you’ll travel on backcountry skis or snowshoes through wild and beautiful landscapes. Learn the basics of avalanche safety, trail navigation through ice and snow, how to build a fire to prepare your meals, how to find water even when the temperature is very low and how to use snow as insulation.
When you embark on a winter journey, you'll explore an environment and meet a challenge that most can only imagine. And when you emerge from this experience you will know there is little life can hand you that you can't handle.
Challenge, distance traveled and skill-intensity varies across course and program lines.
