ABOUT US

We share our pronouns when we introduce ourselves. Here’s why.

We’re building a compassionate community.

One of our core values is Compassion. When you connect with Outward Bound, it’s likely you’ll hear folks sharing their personal pronouns when they introduce themselves. Along with our names, personal pronouns help the people around us know how to address us and reduces the risk and burden of assumption. It’s a way for us to affirm each other’s identities and create a safer space for everyone to participate fully in their Outward Bound experience.

Mental health matters.

Many schools and educators are adopting the same practices, recognizing that identity affirmation leads to more positive self-image, lower anxiety, and improved mental health. According to the Trevor Project, “research has specifically shown lower suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior when a transgender and/or nonbinary youth’s chosen name is consistently used. The more contexts that it is used (home, school, work, and friends), the stronger the effects (Russell et al., 2018). Usage of chosen name resulted in a 29% decrease in suicidal ideation and a 56% decrease in suicidal behavior for each additional context in which it was used.” Making sure our students feel healthy, grounded, and confident are key building blocks for an Outward Bound course experience.

A foundation for growth.

As educators, supporting the whole person is central to our work. In order to push our students to the edge of their comfort zones to discover there is more in them than they know, it’s critical that we establish trust and community first. We believe diversity and inclusion make a richer experience for everyone. An Outward Bound course is a place where you can be fully present, fully you – and you’ll be amazed by what you and your crew can accomplish together!

We’re here to have fun!

At Outward Bound, we’re here to learn, have fun, and make new friends. That’s possible when we respect each other, work together, and are willing to support each other as we make mistakes and grow. This is more than just a camping trip – this is an opportunity to change your life through challenge and discovery.

Continued learning.
