Outward Bound mountaineering courses teach technical skills that equip you to stand atop snow-capped peaks, cross glaciers and navigate crevasses—experiences that put you face to face with pure challenge. Instructors prepare students for peak ascents through hands-on lessons in skills such as kicking steps, glissading and ascending fixed lines over mixed terrain routes and mountain rescue techniques. A wilderness education that is both demanding and rewarding. Mountaineering expeditions grant you access to secret stashes of wilderness few are willing to work for—an experience that evokes confidence, leadership and positive risk taking as you step outside of your comfort zone and reach for higher summits.

Courses take place across American wilderness and international backcountry.

Including the North Cascades in Washington, the Continental Divide in Colorado and the breathtaking Andes of Ecuador. Each location presenting its own challenges, lessons and accomplishments to be discovered by each crew of students.

As one of our most challenging adventure activities offered, mountaineering expeditions require technical gear, more difficult travel and higher altitudes than backpacking courses.

However—challenge, distance traveled and skill-intensity varies across course and program lines.
