Oftentimes, students from our outdoor leadership programs ask us about the Readings Book their instructors carry. The Readings Book is a collection of hundreds of our instructors’ favorite quotes used at the “right moments” to inspire students, make them laugh and to spark moments of reflection on what it is they are out there doing. These quotes are a part of the great memories our students take with them after their course. We have made the book available for order; a way for alumni to take home a piece of Outward Bound with them. Here’s an excerpt from the Readings Book, explaining why it is so impactful:
“For us, the power of these phrases comes from their ability to evoke feelings and experiences that are timeless and without geographic limitation. Mark Twain’s lesson in challenge on a bicycle is just as pertinent today as a recent Outward Bound graduate’s discovery of trust during a rock climbing session. How lucky we are to travel centuries and continents with the people who have contributed to this book; how fortunate to find that we share our frustrations and joys with accomplished sailors, poets, mountaineers, philosophers, naturalists, and fellow Outward Bound students.”
And one of my favorite quotes from the book:
“Old Chinese Proverb: Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it.”
