1965: Thirty-five thousand march on Washington to protest the Vietnam War, the first health warnings are placed on cigarette packages, officially making them a “no-no”, gas is 31 cents a gallon and the Colorado Outward Bound School is putting out their first ever alumni newsletter.
While going through some old files, we uncovered this historic copy of Beyond, the first newsletter from the Colorado Outward Bound School.
Needless to say, the world is a different place than it was 45 years ago. Anti-tobacco campaigns have cost the U.S. billions of dollars. Gas costs have topped out at $4.11 a gallon in recent years. However, not everything has changed. Outward Bound continues to put out its regional alumni newsletters and Outward Bound’s inspiration to provide hands-on learning through outdoor adventure, evidenced throughout this newsletter, endures. While the stories are old, the themes are constants in Outward Bound’s nearly 70 year history.
Read about Outward Bound’s first girls’ outdoor leadership program in the Western Hemisphere. Take in some poetry from alumni and read about a former Colorado Outward Bound School instructor’s experience, as a part of a civil rights team, teaching in Mississippi in 1964.
If you are an alumni, how has Outward Bound inspired you to get involved with your community?
