So, what exactly do days spent hiking a dirt trail or kayaking through salt water give a person? It’s something along the lines of self-reliance and self-confidence – a new sense of courage within a person that helps them to better conquer life’s challenges.
Earlier this week, Joshua Brankman, executive director at the Outward Bound Bay Area Center, discussed the positive effects of outdoor leadership programs with KQED Radio’s Michael Krasny.

Brankman spoke alongside two other outdoor-education experts about the importance and benefits of outdoor adventures. With programs for anyone from teens to military veterans, Brankman mentioned recent research that shows how our programs contributed to increased levels of self-confidence in our students and their likelihood to take up leadership positions after a trip.
