Outward Bound is challenging by design. Thriving here takes compassion, a learning mindset, and a deep desire to do meaningful work. And just like our students on course: we are crew, not passengers. This means everyone contributes. Our successes are shared, and our challenges are our opportunities. From the office to the field, we are growing together.
As a leading organization in experiential education, our instructors are accomplished educators, with extensive experience and training in technical and facilitation skills. Our logistical staff, program teams, and administrative staff are passionate about our mission and are critical to supporting our operations in the communities where we work, live, and play.

Outward Bound’s mission is to change lives through challenge and discovery. While perhaps ambitious and bold, our vision is a more resilient and compassionate world, with more endurance in response to change and more compassion in the face of challenge. To support that vision, we are also actively unpacking our history – a task which requires the same elements our students find on an Outward Bound course: challenge, teamwork, communication, and practice. We are up to the task.
Today in the United States, Outward Bound expeditions and programs bring our mission to life for nearly 40,000 students annually. Hundreds of experienced, dedicated instructors deliver over 1,000 different courses at 9 chartered Outward Bound Schools across the country. Outward Bound expeditions and programs are far-reaching – inside city and suburban classrooms and outside in rugged backcountry settings. All programs adhere to Outward Bound’s unique and powerful educational framework, from our values to design principles to ambitious outcomes. The result is more confident students, with demonstrated leadership abilities and a stronger commitment to their communities.
